What is Catholic Counselling?

Different people mean different things by the term "Catholic Counselling". This is what we mean:

1. Philosophically: Catholic Counselling employs the anthropology of the Catholic Church - the vision of a human person is as a son or daughter of God. A counsellor is equipped to help people by understanding what human people are. Our understanding of the human person is derived from thousands of years of faithful and tested anthropology. We rely on many philosophers in this regard, but lean most heavily on Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, and Karol Wojtyla (John Paul II).

2. Theologically: Catholic Counselling is optimized for those who hold a Catholic worldview. In the field of psychotherapy, there is much focus on sensitivity toward ethnicity, culture, socioeconomics, gender, etc. Religion is rarely mentioned, and usually only in terms of sensitivity toward spirituality, as if all religions and spiritualities are equal and ultimately the same. Catholic Counselling recognizes that having feelings of tolerance and sensitivity is not enough- our counsellors understand and live the Catholic faith, and support clients who wish to adhere to Catholic morality derived from the Scriptures and defined by the Magesterium. We encourage and incorporate prayer, Scripture, devotion, and sacramental life into our clinical work.

3. Psychologically: We employ the best elements of modern psychological science that are consistent with our philosophy and theology.
